Social justice and sustainability: do these concepts really work
together? Rising energy prizes and carbon emission trading have shocked
through the economic discussion-fora. But the results of these trends
can be seen very clearly in day to day life. With a new recession on
the horizon, low and middle class milieus start to struggle with the
higher food and transport prices. Are special rates for the poor a
solution? Should “Robin Hood” measures be introduced or do political
interventions counteract attempts to achieve greater sustainability?
The
workshop will explore synergies and contradictions of sustainability
concepts and focus on a European as well as on a global perspective.
Technological solutions will not be implemented without the notion of
social justice. Sustainability research will open doors for
interdisciplinary scientific agendas as well as for practical policy
making. Are new funding schemes needed to meet the challenge? The panel
includes expertise from political sciences, economic sciences and
psychology as well as from a German aid organization.
