Workshop

IV Sustainable Energy Supply and Consumption

IV.W1 Food (f)or Fuels?

Datum: 24/09/2008
Zeit: 09:00 - 10:30
Ort: Skylounge

Zielgruppe: Researchers and practitioners in the field of renewable energies and biofuels
Ziele: To debate the main issues around sustainability of using biofuels in energy systems, with a specific emphasis on competition with food supply and prices at global level
Format: Presentation(s) and debate
Sprache: Englisch

The use of renewables like wood as energy source is a very old strategy. However, during the last 150 years there has been a tremendous increase of consumption of fossile energy carriers like coal, gas and oil. But, as it is to be expected, non-renewables sooner or later are consumed. This seems to happen at the moment, and the situation becomes even more difficult, since the demand for energy of developing countries is strongly increasing at the same time. All theee factors make the price of energy grow faster and faster.
In this situation interest in renewables is coming back, especially in the industrialised countries. But not only “old” sources like wood are in the focus. As long as organic materials in waste are used, there is no problem either. But more and more the hunger for energy goes so fare that even traditional food sources are converted into energy. So the question is not far away, whether the rich of our planet burn the food of the poor ones, especially for maintaining their mobility behaviour.
In this workshop, questions around an appropriate strategy for alternative energy sources (biofuels) are discussed.
