Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Karl Schmidt graduated from the University of Hannover (Dipl.-Ing. in landscape planning in 1983). He received his doctorate (Dr. Ing.) from Kassel University in 1987. Since, he has held positions as a scientific employee at the Federal Agency for the Environment, Berlin; he headed the department “Soil Conservation” at the Brandenburg State Agency of the Environment, Potsdam. In 1994 he was appointed University Professor at Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus (BTU Cottbus), Chair of Environmental Planning. At BTU, he held various functions, e.g. Vice President for International Affairs (2000-2006). At present, he his head of the “Department of Environmental Planning”.
