Umwelttechnologien entpuppen sich als der Wachstumsmarkt der Zukunft. Es gibt heute kaum noch eine Innovation in der keine Umwelttechnologie steckt. Entscheidend für die zukünftige Rolle Deutschlands in den "grünen Zukunftsmärkten" wird neben dem Erfindungsreichtum von Wissenschaftlern und Ingenieuren vor allem die weitere Ausgestaltung der Rahmenbedingungen sein. Die Abstimmung und Verknüpfung von Umwelt-, Forschungs- und Innovationspolitik wird immer wichtiger. Eine gute Koordination zwischen Forschungsförderung und Regulierung ist entscheidend, damit sich deutsche Unternehmer noch stärker als bisher an führender Stelle in den Leitmärkten für Umwelttechnologien positionieren. Im Rahmen der Session werden gemeinsam mit Vertretern aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft erfolgreiche Instrumente der Innovationspolitik vorgestellt und die Bedeutung von Rahmenbedingungen für Innovationen sowie das zukünftige Zusammenspiel bewährter und neuer Instrumente diskutiert.

Research priority areas for the foreseeable future

• Secondary research of standardisation projects to analyse the role of different stakeholders in the innovation process.
• Development of viable business models for the cooperation of universities and industry which guarantee excellence and profits.
• Incentive mechanisms (i.e. the combination of specific research initiatives and Top Runner approaches) to accelerate the implementation of green technologies.
• Accurately timed inclusion of society in the innovation process. A well-informed and future-oriented society is a prerequisite for innovation.

Necessary framework conditions to foster sustainable innovation

• More coherent research funding. The current funding has to be optimised and the need for alternative funding has to be identified. Especially, the needs and potentials of SME have to be addressed.
• The financing of universities should foster innovations. Cooperation with industry should become an attractive measure to gain reputation and financial power.
• A vital venture capital scene is required to decouple investments in green technologies from the general economic situation.
• Research projects should include the issue of standardisation ab initio. Networking with stakeholders should accompany the development of standards during the whole innovation process.
• The exchange between universities and SME should be enhanced to improve knowledge and technology transfer.
• The lack of specialised workforce for green technologies could partially be compensated by in-firm training and dual study paths.

• The crucial role of entrepreneurship as an important element of innovation.
• There was a controversial debate whether innovation is a primary goal of SME in Germany.
• The potential for savings due to green technologies is still systematically underestimated by SME.
• Students with in-firm training could play an important role in bridging the gap between universities and industry.
