FONA Brussels Office

As of June 2011, the FONA Brussels Office supports the networking of the national "Research for Sustainable Development" Funding Programm with the respective environmental and energy developments on the EU level.

FOrschung für NAchhaltigkeit (FONA) is the German national framework programme for sustainable developments through research and innovation. Each year, FONA spends more than 300 Mio. EUR on research in the fields of:

Society and Economy (including Green Economy)
Energy (fundamental technologies)
Global Change (climate change, sustainable land-use and biodiversity)
Resources and Sustainability (including CO2 capture and usage and raw materials)
and System Earth (oceans, polar research and geosciences

The programme is managed by the Directorate-General (DG) “Provisions for Life” of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Bonn.

The main objective of FONA Brussels Office is to interact with partners working on FONA-related issues in and with the EU institutions. A strong focus lies within the Environment and Energy Directorates of the DG Research and Innovation.

Tasks of the FONA Brussels Office include:

Monitoring
to observe current developments concerning environmental, climate and energy-related research
Networking
to attend FONA-related events and interpret FONA-related document
Communication
to interact with stakeholders and decision-makers on FONA-issues (on behalf of the BMBF)

Current projects include:

SET-Plan (esp. European Energy Research Alliance)
Joint Programming Initiative - JPI (esp. JPI Urban Europe)
Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme - EIP (esp. EIP's "Raw Materials" and "Water")
ERA-Net Developments (esp. Eco Innovera)

The FONA Brussels Office is embedded in the existing network of EU Offices representing major German research organizations (such as WGL, HGF, MPG, KOWI, DLR, FhG).
