Education and research contribute substantially to initiating the necessary changes for sustainable development in industry and society. The new BMBF framework programme "Research for Sustainability" and the resulting implementing measures of the BMBF show what can be done to really make our society more sustainable.

The thematic priorities of future BMBF-funded research for sustainability include

• social action for sustainable development,
• sustainability in industry,
• concepts for the sustainable use of regions, and
• concepts for the sustainable use of resources.

A characteristic feature of all these priorities is that they link education and research and pave the way for effective transfer to broad application.
