Concepts for sustainable use of natural resources
What strategies have to be developed for protection and sustainable use of water and biodiversity, two major resources for humankind?
As a key resource issue for industrialized countries, the finite availability and exploitability of such raw materials as oil and coal have had a decisive impact on the environmental debate since the 1970s. Through the UNCED conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the summit for sustainable development in Johannesburg in 2002 other resources of significant importance for developing and newly industrialized countries increasingly became the focus of attention: water and biodiversity.
Since then these issues have become a subject of discussion on the national and international political agenda to an increasing extent. In recent years research has generated a great deal of new knowledge on these key resources. Nevertheless, many questions regarding sustainable use of these two important resources have yet to be clarified. Therefore, water and biodiversity are a focal point of the resource-based research approaches.
