The future use of the resources in the coastal regions will be based on the principle of sustainability.
An international accepted instrument for the sustainable use of the coastal regions is given by the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM).
Previously, the coastal marine research was organized sectoral. In contrast, ICZM is based on an integrative, multidisciplinary scientific approach considering the increasing utilization of costal resources and the socioeconomic developments.
Since Mai 2004 until 2010 in context of the programme FONA, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding two large scale ICZM-projects, one at the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein and the second one in the region of the Odra estuary.
In June 2002 the European Parliament and the European Council published a recommendation for the implementation of national ICZM- strategies. According to this, in Germany a national ICZM -strategy was evolved and implemented in 2006 by the Cabinet.
