In Europe, the renewed European Sustainable Development Strategy was
adopted by
the European Council in 2006. The Strategy placed SCP among the seven
priority
areas. It recognises the need to gradually change our current
unsustainable consumption and production patterns
and move towards a better-integrated approach to policy-making. The
Strategy invited the European Commission to elaborate an EU SCP
Action plan, which should help to identify and overcome barriers for
SCP, to ensure better
coherence between the different related policy areas, to raise
awareness among
citizens and to change unsustainable consumption habits. The background
document on
the Action Plan also highlights the international dimension of SCP and
wants to
strengthen the cooperation with “Marrakech Process” that was launched
to promote progress on the
10-year framework on sustainable consumption and production.
The session will elaborate on priority issues that need to be addressed
to move towards SCP in Europe and beyond and discuss national, European and
international actions that need to be taken in order to design an innovative
policy framework for SCP.
