Birgit Böhm studied geography with the main focus on town planning and regional development, landscape planning, business administration and geology. She finished her studies in 1990 at the Institute of Geography, University of Hannover. The conclusion of her studies and the most effecting experiences of the first years of work resulted in the necessity that integration and participation of people and sustainable development are a must in developing processes. After two years working in an office for landscape planning which never applied public participation in their cases she went into a business for herself together with some colleagues and founded the civil law association „human being and region“ (mensch und region, Birgit Böhm, Wolfgang Kleine-Limberg GbR). Since 1992 the aim of this company is to support and accompany people within their regional or local or organisational development processes towards a sustainable future.
At universities she is still presenting courses e.g. „Participation within Town Planning Processes“,“Local Agenda 21 and Women“, „Sustainable Development and Public Spirit in Regional Development Processes“ or „Qualitiy Development for Administrators“. She studied further ergonomics (not finished) at the University of Hannover and participated in several advanced training courses for presentation/facilitation and process development.
From 2000 onwards she initiated together with partners (inter alia Prof. Dr. Hanns Buchholz) the networks “CoNet CZA 21 e.V. – Coastal Network Coastal Zone Agenda 21 association“ (www.conet21.net) and Wandelwerte (changing values) www.wandelwerte.de and engages herself actually in the stearing group for a procject called “bread and fish“ (www.bread-and-fish.org).
With her “systemic“ background she works mainly within participative strategic adjustment of development processes towards a sustainable future of companies, communities, towns/cities and regions. Recently she became a member of the Consortium for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (CESAS, USA).
