Economics for Sustainability
How can the manifold conflicts of interest that arise during the transition to renewable energies be resolved in an economically sensible way?
How can economic incentives be used to reduce the use of new land for urban growth?
How can the transition to environmentally-friendly technologies be accelerated in threshold countries?
How can environmental policy as a whole be organised to be more effective?
Economic expertise is a vital prerequisite for answering these and
other important questions being pursued by sustainability policy.
Despite promising attempts, the economic sciences have yet to be
sufficiently integrated into the sustainability discussion. In light
of this, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research set up the
Economics for Sustainability funding programme with a view to
inaugurating economics research that will yield practicable solutions
to concrete sustainability policy issues.
It is also hoped that this research will be realized in
cooperation with the relevant public and private sector partners and in
such a way that awareness and knowledge of the relevant economics
issues will be firmly embedded in the discourse on sustainability both
in Germany and abroad.
