International Cooperation for Sustainability Research

International Cooperation for Sustainability Research - Teaserfoto
Sustainability is a global issue which calls for an international approach as well as international activities and solutions. Many fields, such as climate impact research, demand an international cooperation when they are supposed to show an effect. International cooperation is therefore an important cornerstone for the funding strategies of the framework programme ?Research for Sustainable Development?.

The German Federal Government recognized its responsibility in the European as well as in the international context to cope with the pressing challenges of environmental and climate protection. When it comes to sustainability,Germanycan offer a long-standing research tradition, outstanding scientists and an excellent research infrastructure. Through the means of scientific collaboration, we seek to acquire common opportunities for development as well as a fair distribution of wealth and an effective climate protection. The position as a frontrunner in sustainability research givesGermanya special role in this issue. Together with the fast developing regions in Asia, Latin America andAfricawe strive to work on technologically sophisticated and ecologically responsible future prospects. Furthermore, the BMBF aims at centrally shaping future global research agendas.

Following this approach, the BMBF has created extensive programmes to cooperate with developing countries that will be most affected by climate change. The cooperation with threshold countries such asChina,Brazil,India andSouth Africa will also be intensified because of their yet existing and even growing importance for sustainable development.

These measures are part of the Government’s strategy concerning the internationalisation of science, research and development. It is their aim to strengthen international cooperation with the best scientists worldwide, to extend the collaboration with developing and threshold countries as well as to take on global responsibility and tackle the pressing issues of our time.
