Coordination of National Funding in Europe - ERA-Nets

Apart from the EU Research Framework Programme, the ERA-Nets are another important element for the development of the European Research Area, ERA. They serve the coordination of national funding programmes on similar topics carried out in Europe and shall help reduce the fragmentation of the EFR. The aim is the Europe-wide more efficient use of national funding means through the shaping of joint transnational calls for proposals and the avoidance of double funding within Europe.

The EU-KOM supports ERA-Nets in their constitution phase for the funding of the creation of networks of research sponsors and managers. Joint calls for proposals of the involved states are developed and published within the framework of projects with a duration of 3-4 years.

Since the implementation of this instrument by the EU Commission within the 6th EU Research Framework Programme, the research sponsors of environmental and sustainability research in Europe came together for a large number of activities, some of which have already been completed.

• Eco-innovation – ECO-INNOVERA
• Marine research – SEAS-ERA
  Integrated Water Resource Management – IWRM

ERA-Net+

ERA-Net+-measures represent a further development of the ERA-Nets. Here, the EU Commission makes its own contribution to research funding within the framework of the transnational calls for proposals. 

In the field of environmental and sustainability research the funding of the Baltic Research was carried out via a Net+-measure: Baltic Sea Research - BONUS.
