The European cooperation in research and development represents a great chance for German researchers and actors from industry and society. The BMBF provides the strategic framework for it and seeks to transfer Research for Sustainable Developments to Europe. Therefore, it is actively involved in shaping the EU-Research Framework Programmes and submits proposals on the instrumental and content-related orientation of research funding within this biggest research programme worldwide. Moreover, the BMBF supports activities of industry-driven European Technology Platforms and pursues their activities in the accompanying committees. Successful research in Europe requires not only staff capacities, but also the necessary research infrastructures.
Here, the BMBF makes a great contribution, in particular in marine research, to ensure the availability of usable ships all over Europe. The coordination of national funding activities becomes more and more intensive.
Therefore, for a number of environmental and sustainability research topics ERA-networks were established, which pooled the efforts of many research funding organizations and managers in Europe e.g. in the field of biodiversity, climate, water, forestry and marine research. This development is continued in the so-called Joint Programming Initiatives, JPI, at European level. Here, the BMBF is the driving force in the field of climate research and an influential partner in other initiatives. Research and development in Europe have a complex structure and often seem to be a “sealed book“. In order to pave the way for German stakeholders, the BMBF finances information centres, which provide you with advice on COST and EUREKA-projects and the name of the appropriate contact person for other EU-programmes. An overview is to be found on the FONA-website.
