The German Energy Transition (Energiewende) requires tremendous effort from policy-makers and society. The enormous impact of this task makes it necessary to achieve a broad social consensus on the goal itself and the path to achieving this goal. Therefore, not only technological but also societal innovations are needed.

Both short-term solutions and options for long-term technological as well as societal development are equally called upon to achieve the new goals of the German energy policy. Research on new long-term perspectives for the energy sector must be accelerated. This process needs to reduce the use of fossil fuels, phase out nuclear energy and restructure the energy supply on the basis of renewable energies.

To achieve this target basic research must be funded. However, one must consider that basic research and applied research are two sides of a coin, which have no value without the other. Successful funding must cover all elements of the innovation chain and consider the increasing multidisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity within the field of energy research. Therefore, basic research must include electrochemistry, solid state physics, light-matter interaction, simulations and material properties as well as the development of new methods and tools for process description and condition assessment.
