Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology

With the establishment of the new Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology the German Federal Government and the BMBF aim to strengthen strategically important research competences in Germany for a secure and sustainable supply of raw materials along the entire value chain.

With the foundation of the new Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, the Federal Government pools strategically important research competences to secure the raw material supply of the German economy. The Institute is run jointly by the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf.

With the opening of the Helmholtz-Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, the competences for secure and sustainable raw material supply along the entire value added chain in Germany are enhanced. The new Institute is a central part of the national raw material strategy. The scarcity and thus the increase in value affect, above all, mineral and metal raw materials, as for example the so-called rare earths.

Key technologies of the German economy, such as solar energies, wind energy or electromobility, depend on such increasingly scarce materials.

Thus the more efficient exploitation and use of raw materials is a vital contribution to the securing of the industry location Germany.
