Research on the Implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy (R&I-NBS)

Germany has a national biodiversity strategy (NBS)
(http://www.biologischevielfalt.de/einfuehrung_nbs.html). The strategy describes protection, sustainable use and the societal aspects of biodiversity. This corresponds to the three pillars of the UN-Convention on biological diversity. The realisation of the objectives and measures of the NBS is a task concerning the society as a whole. Research as a major player should accomplish its contribution to this task.

The Federal Biological Diversity Programme (BPBV)
(http://www.biologischevielfalt.de/bundesprogramm.html) was launched in January 2011 for the implementation of the NBS. Four main topics are defined in the BPBV. For those four topics the funding of innovative conservation approaches can be funded. In a supplementary joint initiative of the BMBF and BMU, projects will be funded, which implement research into practice by consortia between research and nature conservation bodies. The innovation potential of research should be used for development and trial of application-oriented, cooperative strategies and exemplary measure concepts for the protection and sustainable use of biological diversity. An exemplary implementation of the results during the contract period and partnership with nature conservation bodies ensures that the consortia apply themselves to the development of feasible solutions for defined problems.
