Cracked gas: Green cracked gas as fuel gas for brick production

In the project “Spaltgas” (cracked gas), a reactor is being developed in which ammonia can be split into nitrogen and hydrogen. The resulting gas mixture is to be used for burning bricks. The overarching goal is a CO2-neutral brick production.

The brick industry is one of the most energy-intensive sectors and faces particular challenges in the context of the energy transition. Already in the last decades, brick producers have made significant efforts to save carbon dioxide emissions. In order to make production largely CO2-neutral, further adjustments in production and innovative, technical solutions are needed. An important prerequisite is to replace the fossil natural gas used so far in brick burning with CO2-neutral fuels such as green hydrogen. In order to use hydrogen in the burning process, the project "cracked gas" relies on the energy carrier ammonia, which is already produced in large quantities in the chemical industry and is available. Since ammonia cannot be used directly as a fuel, it must first be split into nitrogen and hydrogen.

The BMBF-funded cracked gas project aims to develop a new type of cracking reactor and an appropriately designed burner to split ammonia by heating and with the help of suitable catalysts. The resulting cracked gas can be used as a fuel gas instead of natural gas in brick production.
The first step is to build a test plant in which the newly developed components, reactor and burner, will be integrated. In order to test these in the second step, the project team will examine the new process in experiments to see if it is suitable for practical use - here using the brick industry as an example. In principle, the innovation can also be used for other industrial processes that require heat. Thus, after successful completion of the project, other industries may also benefit from the innovation.
