The set-up of the project office “clean water“ was marked by the signing of the German-Chinese “Research and  Innovation Programme Clean Water” by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) of the People’s Republic of China and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) during the first German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations in June 2011 in Berlin.

The research programme, supported by the project office "Clean Water", includes the topics of water supply, waste water treatment, water resource protection and cleaner industrial production. The goal is to develop an innovation platform which sets the framework for joint research and the development of innovative concepts that build the base for recommendations on sustainable water management in China. Therefore the project office supports, in co-operation with its Chinese partners, relevant decision-makers in identifying problems and needs in the Chinese water sector as well as the finding and promotion of innovative solutions and their implementation.

Furthermore the project office supports the formation of research co-operation between universities and the private sector and facilitates access to Chinese institutions. Lastly, the project office supports vocational and academic training with a focus on “Clean Water” in China.

The “Clean Water” Programme, conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), sits within the Resources and Sustainability Sector as part of  the framework programme ”Research for Sustainable Development” (FONA). The R&D Projects are mainly financed through the fund for “International Partnerships for Sustainable Climate Protection Technologies and Environmental Technologies (CLIENT I)“ and and "International Partnerships for Sustainable Innovations" (CLIENT II)".
