LEAP-SE – European–African Partnership on Sustainable Energy

A long-term partnership between Europe and Africa in the field of research and innovation on sustainable energies – that is the goal of the Long term Europe Africa Partnership on Sustainable Energy (LEAP-SE). The six-year initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the EU research programme Horizon Europe. It is the follow-on project to “Long term Europe Africa Partnership on Renewable Energy” (LEAP-RE).

The programme LEAP-SE supports joint projects between African, European and German research institutions, companies and NGOs which aim to implement promising initiatives in the field of sustainable energies. The cooperation between Africa and Europe is intended to strengthen local research in the partner countries in Africa and to promote innovative capacity. In doing so, specific societal needs and capacities are taken into account. Regional differences are also considered.

LEAP-SE addresses projects that cover all aspects of the value chain of sustainable energies and embrace energy generation as well as conversion, storage and use. The thematic fields, so-called “Multiannual Road Maps” (MARs), focus on key topics in order to sustainably and efficiently shape the development of renewable energies: innovation priorities, smart and off-grid systems, productive and domestic use, access to energy, recycling, etc. Additionally, a new MAR 7 on the topic “Production and Use of Green Hydrogen” has now been included for LEAP-SE. Both basic research initiatives and industrial research, applied research and experimental development that cover all innovation steps are supported. LEAP-SE builds on the Long-Term Joint EU-AU Research and Innovation Partnership on Renewable Energy (LEAP-RE).
