The exhibition showcases the achievements and prospects of German marine research by presenting select, true-to-detail models of German research ships, complemented by multimedia formats like virtual tours in 3D. The exhibition traces the beginnings of German marine research and follows through to the prospects and challenges it faces in the future. It underscores Germany's role in cutting-edge research with high-tech vessels whose expeditions have gained international recognition.

A light and sound installation with a focus on the oceans and seas. The ocean comes alive and invites reflection. The museum facade will be bathed in light from 17:00-22:00 to the sounds of the sea and whale song.

  • Expedition Clockwork Ocean (Rheinaue Bonn)

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht presents the full-dome, 30-minute film The Eddy Hunt. An international team presents images of ocean eddies taken from a zeppelin parked over the Baltic Sea. Eddies affect the migration of marine animals, algae growth and the climate.

Video projections turn empty shop windows into aquariums, daily filmlets and documentaries shed light on the exploration and utilization of the oceans and the diversity of the underwater world.

  • The Ocean in Depth (Kaiserpassage Bonn)

Reproductions of deep-sea landscapes in a diorama are matched by models of underwater technologies used by German marine research institutions. Visitors can gather background information on the geology and biology of the deep sea with the help of interactive 3D visualization as well as take a virtual flight through underwater landscapes. The scenarios are based on real data and are accurately reflected in the underwater world portrayed in the diorama.
The module shares knowledge and inspires fascination for the natural sciences.

Manganese nodules in the Pacific, hot springs off the coast of New Zealand and cloud patterns over the Atlantic: the research conducted on the SONNE research vessel is as diverse as its areas of operation. The multifunctional touch table displays a world map showing the route of the SONNE since its commissioning. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vessel's impressive expeditions through texts, pictures, and videos and discover first research results.
