BiodivConnect 2025: New transnational call for ecosystem restoration

On September 9, 2025, the European biodiversity partnership Biodiversa+ will launch the new transnational research call “BiodivConnect – Restoration of ecosystem functioning, integrity, and connectivity” as part of Horizon Europe. The aim is to promote innovative research that feeds into practical approaches to restoring functional, integrated, and connected ecosystems.

The call covers a wide range of topics – from the development and measurement of restoration targets to the transferability and scaling of successful approaches to the long-term resilience and sustainability of restored ecosystems.

Three thematic priorities:

  • Setting restoration targets and measuring success
  • Transferability and scaling of nature restoration efforts
  • Resilience and sustainability of restoration efforts

The application process consists of two stages:

  • Pre-proposals by early November 2025
  • Full proposals by early April 2026

For applicants from Germany, the DFG (German Research Foundation) and the BMFTR/PTJ are available as funding organizations. Up to €210,000 can be applied for per project (excluding overheads; personnel costs in accordance with BMFTR funding guidelines). Pre-proposals must be submitted exclusively via the Biodiversa+ Submission System, full proposals additionally via the DFG portal.

The call is supported with a total budget of over €40 million. So far, 32 countries and the European Commission are participating. Projects should contribute significantly to the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework and to European and global biodiversity targets – even beyond 2030.

Important dates:

  • September 9, 2025: Official call start
  • September 11, 2025, 1–3 p.m. CEST: Online information event for applicants (including German contact persons from the DFG and PTJ)
