JPI Climate „Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe“

The Joint Programming Initiative JPI Climate is an intergovernmental pan-European initiative on a voluntary basis. It contributes to a highly coordinated knowledge development for a climate neutral and resilient Europe by improving the scientific expertise on climate change risks, adaptation and mitigations options, and by connecting that knowledge with decision-making.

Climate change is a complex reality, which affects European society at large. Coordinated, large-scale European efforts, in research, innovation and governance are necessary, in order to better understand causes and impacts of Climate Change and respond to them, to make targeted political decisions and to initiate the right measures for a climate-neutral sustainable and innovative Europe. Research, knowledge dissemination and innovation are crucial in helping to confront these challenges and generate new opportunities for sustainable development.

JPI Climate makes significant contributions on this by closing knowledge gaps through interdisciplinary integration within climate research and by improving coordination and cooperation between research and application.

JPI Climate is one of currently ten Joint Programming Initiatives at the European level and is supported by 19 Member States. With its research ministry (BMBF), Germany played a leading role in setting up the JPI Climate from the beginning of 2010 and is now one of the most active members. Several jointly funded research programs have emerged from the initiative, some co-funded by the EU Commission.

JPI Climate

  • provides the platform where these objectives can be met, aligning national research priorities according to a jointly agreed Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) with the aim of complementing and supporting initiatives at the European level (e.g. ERA-NETs, Horizon Europe, Climate KIC, ESFRI Projects).
  • facilitates the coordination, collaboration and exploitation of synergies while working against fragmentation and duplication of efforts. Coordination of the research base secured through national resources will help underpin European efforts to confront climate change.
  • aims to respond to the needs of policy and decision makers and the European society at large for knowledge-based information and services to address climate change. The main objective of this initiative is to provide integrated climate knowledge and decision support services for societal innovation.
  • is innovative in its interdisciplinary approach in connecting natural- with socio-economic sciences and it is guided, coordinated and managed through a flexible collaborative governance mechanism.

The main challenges to which JPI Climate is dedicated are derived from the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA):

  • Understanding of the processes and consequences of climate change,
  • Provision of knowledge for climate-related decision-making processes and measures,
  • Research on sustainable societal transformations due to climate change.

There is also a strategic mechanism:

  • Connecting people, problems and solutions in a systemic approach.
