New call for proposals promotes transferable water technology innovations

Demand for modern water and wastewater technologies is steadily growing worldwide. In Germany alone, estimates suggest that around 800 billion euros will be required for investment in water management infrastructure over the next 20 years. To drive innovation in this sector, Germany is focusing on collaboration with international technology leaders, among other things. In this context, the German-Israeli water technology cooperation programme, established in 1974, has announced a new deadline for project submissions. The focus is now even more strongly on the transferability of water technology innovations beyond the two countries.

Germany and Israel are continuing their decades-long collaboration in water research with another call for proposals. The aim is to develop innovations in water technology and water systems that can also be applied to other regions. Until July 8, 2026, interested parties from both countries can submit applications for joint research and development projects. Funding will be provided for ideas that are both innovative and economically promising. The call text and the application form are available in English.

Please note that the submission process for Israeli applicants includes two phases: Pre-proposals must be submitted through an online system by July 1, 2026 (15:00 local time in Israel). The affiliated Israeli institution must then submit the final application no later than July 8, 2026 (15:00 local time in Israel).

For German applicants, only the July 8, 2026 deadline applies.

The bilateral water technology cooperation, established in 1974, is one of the longest-standing and most successful research collaborations between the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and Israel's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Young researchers also have the opportunity to apply for the Young Scientists Research Program (YSEP)

The overall goals of the cooperation are:

  • Developing innovative solutions to water-related challenges in Israel, the surrounding region and Germany, which can be applied to similar regions
  • Promoting the adoption of state-of-the-art water and environmental technologies in industry
  • Supporting and strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the water sector, as well as collaboration between the academic and business communities

The joint project proposals of the German and Israeli partners will be selected by BMFTR and MOST, taking into account external reviews.
